It’s that time of year again when we start the tradition of starting our New Year’s resolutions and secretly wondering if we’ll keep them this time. We vow to eat better, exercise more, be kinder, lose weight and keep it off, or quit smoking. Unfortunately, about 90% of those resolutions will fail. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. You can love your family, your spouse, and your job, and love your life all at the same time as fulfilling your promises to yourself too.
How do you balance all of this, and what will you need to make that shift? Here are several New Year’s resolutions for better work-life balance with tips to keep you on track.
Get ready for a New Year Resolution!
1. Start Every Morning Right
What you do in the first 10 minutes of every day has a strong influence on how you approach the rest of your day. Do you set your alarm extra early so that you can hit the snooze button? Do you read stressful emails or surf Facebook before getting out of bed? Get rid of this habit. Instead, make sure your cell phone or alarm clock is out of reach or in another room so that you have to get up out of bed just to stop it. Then, you should get into the habit of stretching because this improves blood circulation, stress relief, and much more.
Lastly, you should always eat breakfast. Instead of having coffee first thing in the morning, try drinking water with lemon because water on an empty stomach helps banish headaches, improves digestion, boosts the immune system, relieves fatigue, and also helps flush out toxins.
2. The One-Day Formula
Are you one of those people who aren’t able to find enough time to pursue the things that you really want to do? Remember that it takes time to make time. To help combat this dilemma, divide each day into three 8-hour blocks. Figure that you need 8 hours for work and 8 hours for sleep. That leaves you with 8 hours of productivity. Take out approximately 2 hours for your commute from work or school. That leaves you with a six-hour block each day that’s yours to do as you wish.
Consider that an hour of exercise can help control weight loss and fitness goals, or an hour of meditation can keep you grounded and calm throughout the day. If used wisely, an hour a day of anything is enough to make important changes to your life.
3. Create Work-Life Balance
If you feel like you are super-stressed, that means you are not balanced, and this is not healthy. Even though certain amounts of stress can be a good thing, and are required to keep us going, too much stress can make us irritable, anxious, and depressed, leading to greater health risks. You can create a work-life balance by setting some simple priorities.
Make time for the important things in your life, like friends and family, so that you have something to look forward to. Drop those energy-draining activities that suck the life out of you. By making small, positive changes to your daily schedule, you will help yourself enjoy a better work-life balance in the coming year.
